Food- on the ship- part one

9/23
Caviar  and salmon salad

Still Sunday night!  We’ve eaten 4 meals on board so far and each one was distinctive.
Late Sat night when we got to the boat, food was waiting for us.  Service is quite formal with salad, soup, entrée, and desserts.  That first evening we had a piece of meat with pineapple and cheese.  I thought it tasted like and had the texture of chicken, however my fellow diners insisted that it was pork.  Didn’t matter, it tasted really good.  We left before dessert came, to get to an informational meeting

Breakfast will be a buffet each morning with eggs, cold cuts, hot dogs, cereal, tomatoes/cucumbers/ and peppers.  No sweet bread, but lots of chewy tasty breads. Later discovered some wonderful banana bred.

Lunch today was a breaded turkey cutlet with very good mashed potatoes and I think cabbage/.  The soup was chicken broth and the dessert , an amazing banana flavored very thick ice cream with small chocolate pieces.

Supper tonite was beef stroganoff.  When you think of Beef stroganoff, don’t you visualize flat curly noodles , tender beef pieces all in a thick brown gravy with maybe mushrooms and sour cream?  That must be the American version.  This stroganoff had a pile of very tender beef cooked with onions in the center of the plate (there was a sauce that I can’s place, but no gravy.  Surrounding the beef were multicolored tube pasta pieces, again very little to no sauce.  It tasted great, but just wasn’t what I was expecting.  We heard the story of the Count of Strognoff (or something) who was getting old and had bad teeth.  He asked his chef to create a dish that had beef, but was easy to chew.  Voila!  Beef Stroganoff.     Dessert was chocolate éclair.  YUMMM!

Now let’s talk about the room numbers.    We’re on the 4th deck, and I can’t say I’ve looked at the numbers on any of the other decks, but ours are unusual.    As we go down the hall, 401 and 402 are across from each other (nothing unusual there)  followed by 403 and 404.  Then we get a little weird  the next two numbers across from each other are 407 and 408, then 409 and 410.  (keep in mind, we’re looking for 406)  Next comes 405 and 406.  Next door to 406 is 430 and across the hall 429, then we go back to 411 and 412, 413 and 414.

It’s raining outside altho’ N says it’s not terribly cold.  Several  folks went to the Moscow by Night optional and I would have gone, except I am recovering from an allergy or cold or something and I felt that I didn’t need to be out in this weather until midnight.  Guess I’m just a wimp.  But I really don’t want to be sick for the next 8 days.  So we’ll stay in, stay warm and get some needed sleep.   (Later, many of those who went to this option were disappointed because Red Square was not lit up as it usually is.  They were preparing for some sort of light show and had all the usual lights off to prepare. )
